Can you use a pre-paid visa giftcard to pay for stuff that requires a credit card online?

I’m trying to subscribe to something that wants a credit card and there’s a $100 balance but it keeps rejecting the card saying it’s declined. What do I do?

Call the phone number on the back of the pre-paid visa giftcard and ask them what’s going on.

No, its because those prepaid visa gift cards only can be used when stores type in the specific amount. You can’t just swipe it like a normal credit card, you have to specifically have an amount keyed in, and since you are buying something online, it doesn’t specifically run it for the amount. It preauthorizes it to make sure you have an active account and then after a few days it finally charges it to your account. I used to work for ggp, which is a company that owns malls and gives out those cards, and I had a lot of complaints about people not being able to use it, and it’s because instead of just swiping it freely, you have to run the amount at the time. Kind of like when you use your card at a gas station? And it only charges a dollar, and a few days later the transaction goes through.

Sounds like something is wrong with the card. You can call them or usually check online for your balance. Maybe something happened when it was purchased during the activation process or when you first went to register it to your name. Prepaid credit cards work when you are trying to purchase something online. I bought a prepaid mastercard for that very reason. I don’t want to put my regular credit card numbers online because of hacker possibilities so I just keep $100 on a prepaid card so it is handy but can’t be misused and wrack me up a big bill.
