Online Credit Card Fraud and Actions to Take
Posted on January 11th, 2011 No commentsGreg Pierce asked:
Online credit card fraud is a term used for the theft and illegal use of credit cards. It is a very rampant case all around the world today. In fact, the Government of the United States of America has lost $315 billion dollars last 2005 from credit card theft alone. And in the year 2006, nearly 22 million consumers fell victim to credit card fraud.
Phishing – This is a widely used method by criminals. This term refers to the distribution of fake emails by the criminal through the Internet. The email would usually let the victim fill-up a form with his personal details, including the name and PIN number of the credit card. In this manner, the criminal gets the information and uses it to purchase goods or any items.
Pharming – This technique has only been discovered recently. This is one of the most dangerous among the three. The process involves the tampering with the domain name resolution process on the Internet. By hijacking or corrupting a Domain Name System (DNS), a user types the URL of a website he wants to visit without the knowledge that he will be redirected to a fake site. Unaware with what is happening, the user may just type in his bank account or card details making them a victim of Pharming.
Skimming – This is another process which involves using a device to copy the encoding data of a credit card. The device is usually inserted to an ATM machine and used as a card reader. This process is not so common these days anymore.
Actions- If you suspect that you have been a victim of a credit card fraud or theft, it is very important that you take actions as soon as possible. The very first thing you need to do if your card has been stolen or is lost is to go to your card issuer and report what happened.
After you have reported the incident, if no result has been given to you by the credit card issuer it would be better if you would follow up the case through phone calls and letters. If you are to send the letter, it should contain the details of your case like the date the card went missing, the date you reported it as lost or fraud and other details about your card.
Being able to know the different tactics that scammers and thefts use to gain access to your credit cards is very important for you to be able to avoid from becoming a victim of this rising fraud often common in the internet.

How to Fight Online Transaction Fraud
Posted on November 19th, 2010 No commentsPanah C Rad asked:
Have you been a victim of online transaction fraud? If you have bought items on eBay or other 3rd party marketplaces, you have probably had an experience with a seller who has tried to take your money without delivering on her promise. If you are a victim of online fraud, you are not without hope. There are steps you can take to prevent and fight online fraud:
PayPal Protection: Most online marketplaces allow you to use PayPal as the safer method of payment. PayPal comes with numerous protection policies for sellers and buyers. Unfortunately, unethical sellers always find holes in the best protections plans. For instance, if you buy a digital product using PayPal, and you do not receive your product, there is a good chance that you won’t get your money back. But you should file your dispute with PayPal regardless and push them to move your case forward.
Credit Card fraud protection: if PayPal does not honor its buyer protection policy, you should contact your credit card issuer to ask for a charge-back. Most credit card companies will ask you for transaction details to investigate. So there is a chance that your chargeback can be rejected (especially if PayPal challenges your charge-back). It is essential for you to use a $0 fraud liability card to make sure you are protected to some level. You should also provide your credit issuer with proper documentation to help them resolve the situation in your favor. The best way to go is to save all the communications and transaction documents that you have from the seller and forward them to your issuer’s investigation team.
Internet Crime Compliant center: if your charge-back is rejected by your card issuer, you should contact the authorities about your online transaction. Internet Crime Compliant Center (IC3.gov) is one of the best places to go to file a police report against the fraudulent seller. You need to make sure you have all the documentation handy to provide the investigators with information about the seller. Please make sure to use this as the very last resort. If you file a complaint with IC3.gov, real investigators will be on your case, which means you will be held responsible for any lies. So make sure to tell the truth.
Online fraud is very common these days. While services such as PayPal make it hard for fraud artists to trick folks, fraud still happens every day. By using a safe credit card you can protect yourself against most fraud cases, but in worst case scenario you should not be shy about contacting the authorities to report any fraud cases.

Online Credit Card Processing
Posted on March 31st, 2010 No commentsMichael Torino asked:
On having an internet store or retail e-commerce website, you will require online credit card processing. Online merchant account and credit card payment gateway together can provide your customers an option to purchase goods any time and anywhere, with a click of the mouse.
Here is a brief description of how online credit card processing actually works. The online customer interested in purchasing product or service from merchant searches and reaches the concerned merchant s website. Through merchant s website, customer does purchase and before leaving the website enters their billing information. For any payment to be done online, security is must.
If merchant s website is not having secured webpage then the customer is to be transferred to secured payment gateway. If merchant s website is a secured one then without leaving the site, the billing information of the customer is passed on to the payment gateway, which is further transmitted to the processor. The processor passes the billing information received from online payment gateway onto the credit card issuer bank. The issuer bank verifies the validity of the card and whether the amount requested on card is available or not. Once the requested amount by the customer is available, the bank set aside that amount for the merchant and sends back an approval number; otherwise a decline message is sent by the issuer bank to the processor which in turn passes back to merchant s site.
If the merchant is not having a secure site, the gateway may pass the approval information to the customer directly. Final payment is deposited in the internet merchant s account. This normally takes two business days.
Few important points to remember before setting your online credit card processing for your business. Even though online merchant accounts needs few days to set up but it is always better to start the procedure of its setting few weeks in advance to the actual time you start using it, since there may be many other important items to be worked on in the last few days before you open your new business.
There are many companies or banks offering online credit card processing but always opt for the one who are experts in this field so that you get the best deal in terms of advice, software and costs, therefore always prefer Power Pay Services. The companies or banks not specialize in online credit card processing can never be update with the latest trends and features available in market, thereby making your account lacking in many latest developments. The online credit card processing fees is different from retail credit card processing. All the processing fees to be levied should be properly stated and if you have any doubt better clear it before it s too late.
Let your online credit card processing have an established gateway company. Even though newer gateway companies may have excellent products but a high degree of reliability can be expected from established older companies like Power Pay Services. Always it is better to opt for company with proven records.
