The Positives and Negatives of Online Credit Card Use

Using your credit card online may be the epitome of convenience. Using a credit card online combines commerce and technology.
When the Internet started growing in popularity, barriers between knowledge and communication were broken. The Internet also brought around the existence of shops – e-shops or virtual shops – that only existed on the Internet. You could go to these shops by using an online credit card. Once the payment was approved, the products were delivered to you. This was convenience at its best.
Online credit card use is becoming more and more popular as more virtual shops appear every day online. The possibility of taking credit card payments online has given a new meaning to shopping. You can now shop not only from the comfort of your home and pajamas, but you also can get discounts. There is no longer any need to worry about the weather, traffic jams, or any other thing that would deter you from shopping. Now, you just have to go to a virtual shop, select the item you want, and use their online credit card payment provider to pay. Before you know it, your order comes to your door.
Accepting online credit card payments through a processing facility also means that it’s become easier for someone to start a business online. Anyone can do this, but they don’t necessarily have to have credentials or even be a legitimate business. You should be cautious about using businesses online that are unfamiliar to you or your friends.
Taking online payments does have its challenges, however. One of the downfalls of using credit cards online is the possibility of credit card fraud. This fraud can happen in two different ways. The first involves the company on whose website you are making the payment. The company could be fraudulent by taking the payment but not delivering the products. The company also could use the details that you provide about your credit card for fraudulent activities.
Another type of fraud happens when criminals use different types of software and devices to steal the details of credit card payments as you put them in the website’s payment form. This software typically is known as spyware and the criminals installing it are spies. Spyware works by capturing your typing and taking pictures of whatever you do online. The spyware then passes the information on to the criminal. There are different programs that you can use to counteract the spyware and protect your computer and your information.
Although using credit cards online can be more convenient for everyone, it doesn’t come without faults and challenges. You must use caution when you are making credit card payments online. You shouldn’t access your bank accounts or make online payments from any unsecured network, for example. You also should be wary of making such payments while shopping in Internet cafes.

Online Credit Card Dealings and Benefits
Posted on March 21st, 2011 No commentsTerro White asked:
Applying for a credit card in the standard way usually involves submitting a set of documents to the sales agent who collects them on behalf of the credit card company you are dealing with. Although, there isn’t much trouble in this format, there is a chance that confidential information about you such as your salary slips, identification information etc. goes into the hands of people you are not sure are trustworthy.
It might lead to leakage of information, such as phone numbers inviting thousands of marketing calls or in serious scenarios, even identity theft. This is one reason why online card application process is much safer and smoother.
Online Process
The online process is very simple and involves submitting documents online. The credit card application too is via an online form, which can be done by the person applying for the card himself or herself. This is much safer as personal information is not divulged. The online application process itself is very transparent and customers can track the status, another of its benefits.
Online Payments
With the working hours of working people clashing with business hours of these card offices, telephone and electric bills etc. more and more people are resorting to online credit card payment of bills. Starting from the card itself, while some people still prefer to drop a check for the monthly payment of the outstanding balance, more and more people are resorting to online payment of these card bills.
Firstly, one can keep a screenshot or printout of the payment if they are very cautious. Secondly, online payments are always easier to track. Some people even connect the credit card balance with their checking account and the money is auto-debited from their accounts although this is not the preferred way.
Online card payments are also used for paying phone and electricity bills. In fact, many credit cards have utility features available to customers wherein they can connect to select service providers and clear their phone, internet and electricity dues.
Advantages Of Online Payments
These online payments have several advantages. Firstly, one doesn’t need to waste time commuting to and from the offices. Secondly, one doesn’t need to worry about them during office hours. Most of these credit cards allow recurring payments too for internet bills, prepaid phone bills etc. The biggest benefit of paying these bills this way is to keep track of the expenses and do all of them at the same time once a month. Online Credit Card Processor How to Choose
Posted on January 28th, 2011 No commentsAdam Abernethy asked:
When choosing an credit card processing agent several aspects should be considered in addition to the cost. There are many off line and online merchant account sources to choose from. You should consider what they have to offer and how they help serve your specific needs.
One of the best places to start your research is by determining which credit or debit cards you wish to accept. American Express and Discover give you the option of applying directly, but MasterCard and Visa require that you establish service through one of their sales channels.
As an example, the place you now bank most likely offers merchant services and may be the easiest way to start your credit card payment processor shopping. Often times merchant service are offered in bundles with merchant products that you may not need or use. It’s worth looking into a banks packaged services, but you may want your merchant account a la carte.
There are many independent sales organizations that sell merchant accounts, credit card swipe machines and even software for online credit card processing. The ISO’s don’t actually process payments, that’s done through a third party. That third party could be your local bank or a banking institution out of state.
Your local Chamber of Commerce or other networking groups may be a good resource for referrals to find a reliable merchant or card services company. Ask other business people you know for their recommendations and specifically, colleagues in the same industry can be particularly helpful. Restaurants, car dealers and doctors all have different needs when it comes to accepting credit, debit and gift cards in the shop, office or online. Someone in the same industry as you may have found a good solution for your needs, even if you are just now discovering what those needs are.
Possibly even more important than slight variations on costs and price is an organization’s customer service. Remember a credit card merchant account is like any other business bank account and when you need help or clarification, time is money. If the company offers referrals, call them and ask how easy or difficult is it to get through to customer service and inquire about how the fair thepayment processor is when dealing with disputed charges or charge backs.
Some service providers, especially web based payment processors may charge for customer service or different levels of customer service on a monthly or even per occurrence basis. Some companies can be reached at all hours even on weekends and some service departments are only open during normal business hours. Consider when you do most of your sales transactions and let that be your guide. Also online, internet help may be offered in addition to phone support.
My last piece of advice is to make sure you are doing business with a reputable company. In the case of Visa and Master Card you are relying on the processor to handle your money and make sure you get paid in a timely manner. Checking the Better Business Bureau and online checking of possible complaints only takes a few minutes and can that information in the long run could be …”priceless”.

The Life of an Online Credit Card Transaction
Posted on December 4th, 2010 No commentsSean P Jones asked:
Credit card payment is the most common way of online transaction, yet when it comes to understanding how credit card processing works most of us are quite confused.
When a retail store cashier swipes your credit card through credit card terminal, the following process takes place: credit card and payment details are sent electronically to merchant’s acquiring bank, which contacts credit card issuing bank; in case transaction is approved, funds are deposited on the merchants account.
Online credit card processing in ecommerce adheres to the same processing steps, except the physical credit card terminal that swipes your card in a retail store is substituted by payment gateway (Authorize.Net, 2checkout, CHASE Paymentech, etc.) – a service that processes online payments in a secure way.
The overall credit card processing scheme in an online store usually looks like the following:
A merchant needs to have a merchant account and a payment gateway account in order to set up credit cad processing in his store.
Let’s follow the steps from the time a customer types his credit card number in an online store to pay for his order till he receives a response whether the payment went through:
1. A customer places an order and types his credit card number on a secure site of an online store. Store administrator sees the shopping cart details, which include order and billing information.
2. Shopping cart details along with merchant account are sent to payment gateway secure server for processing.
3. Payment gateway forwards transaction information to merchant’s acquiring bank.
4. Merchant’s acquiring bank forwards transaction information to the credit card issuing bank for transaction verification.
5. Credit card issuing bank verifies transaction and sends response code (Approve, Deny, and reason for denial if applicable) back to merchant’s acquiring bank.
6. Merchant’s bank sends credit card transaction details and response back to payment gateway. If payment is approved, the bank will deposit funds on a merchant’s account at the scheduled time.
7. Payment gateway sends transaction details and response back to merchant’s online store.
8. Payment information is displayed to the customer; i.e. “credit card was charged”, “credit card was denied”, etc.
At certain processing stages fees will be charged from the transaction total. The amount of fees depends on a payment gateway used, merchant account, credit card type, and other factors; it usually adds up to be two to three percent of total charges.

Accept Credit Card Payment Online
Posted on August 7th, 2010 No commentsDominic Ferrara asked:
Everyone is selling on the web these days. When we ponder this concept, most of us immediately think of EBay. After all, this is pretty much where it all began. I have to give props to the fellow who started the online auction phenomenon. As of now, he’s definitely sitting pretty. Since then, so many nuances have stormed cyberspace. Now you can pick and choose from a variety of online forums and auction websites that sell products. You too can get in the game and sell a few items of your own. The cool part is you don’t even have to bother with checks and money orders. Why not just accept credit card payment online? Anyone can do it now. Welcome to the age of big business.
I was speaking with a custom knife vendor on the phone the other day. I wanted to purchase one of his products, but wanted more information before I actually threw down the cash. I decided to call him up and get a feel for who he was a bit. This is so much more personal than emailing. Well, needless to say, we chatted about knives for some time. Once I had decided on a piece, he asked me if I wanted to pay him with a credit card or via PayPal. Now, for those of you who aren’t in the loop with PayPal, it’s an EBay company that allows you to send and receive electronic payments. You can accept credit card payment online with this service. If someone wishes to buy from you, they can add a credit card to their PayPal account and quickly send you the funds. It’s ideal if you buy and sell online a lot. Anyway, I was stoked that I could simply PayPal the knife vendor. This makes life easier for me. I typically don’t want to use my credit card at all, but I do keep some cash in my PayPal account. Anyone can open one of these on the web.
Imagine you’re selling some big ticket items on EBay. The person who wins your items will most likely hope you accept credit card payment online, or have some sort of Paypal account set up. It just makes life a heck of a lot easier now days. No one wants to bother with money orders and checks are becoming obsolete. Thank God! So check into PayPal and see how you can begin to accept credit card payment online as easy as pie. This is ideal for anyone who sells on the web.

Managing Credit Card Debt
Posted on July 23rd, 2010 No commentsRob D Stone asked:
Getting into credit card debt causes many consumers to end up in over their head. The debt that is paid off in minimum payments will take years to fully pay off, if it ever occurs at all. Credit cards are designed to keep the user in debt constantly paying high amounts of interest for years and years. While it is far better to never get into debt at all, for many people this advice comes too late. There are some things that consumers can do to dig their way out from under the crush of credit card debt.
First, make a list of all of your debt and the amount of interest that is being paid on each card. If you can get a debt consolidation loan, this will not eliminate the amount that you owe, but it will reduce the amount of interest that is being paid on it. A debt consolidation loan can also lump all of your credit card bills into one monthly payment that is much easier to manage.
If a debt consolidation loan is not possible, you should begin making larger payments than the minimum. For those with multiple credit cards to pay off, concentrate on one at a time and pay it off while you pay the minimum on the others. You will instantly begin to reduce the amount of interest you are paying, once you begin to eliminate each credit card payment.
Debt management companies can also help you to get out from under your debt. These businesses help you to better manage your monthly payments and will help you work out a budget. You may also be able to negotiate a better deal with your credit card companies if you are working with a debt management company.
These are a few of the things that you can do to manage your credit card debt. Explore all of your options and find the one that works best for your situation. Getting out of debt is not an easy task. It is essential that you work on a budget and stick with it. To make extra payments on your credit cards, you will have to make cutbacks in other areas. Go over your budget with a fine tooth comb to find every area that you spend extra money.
It will be well worth the struggle once you have your debt paid off and you are debt free. It is a good rule of thumb to only make purchases with a credit card that you will pay off at the end of the month. Even if you find a great sale on an item, if you do not plan to have the money at the end of the month, do not make the purchase. You will not be saving anything if you end up paying interest on that sale item. With a little hard work, you will have your finances completely under control, which will put more money in your pocket in the end.

Online Credit Card Processing
Posted on March 31st, 2010 No commentsMichael Torino asked:
On having an internet store or retail e-commerce website, you will require online credit card processing. Online merchant account and credit card payment gateway together can provide your customers an option to purchase goods any time and anywhere, with a click of the mouse.
Here is a brief description of how online credit card processing actually works. The online customer interested in purchasing product or service from merchant searches and reaches the concerned merchant s website. Through merchant s website, customer does purchase and before leaving the website enters their billing information. For any payment to be done online, security is must.
If merchant s website is not having secured webpage then the customer is to be transferred to secured payment gateway. If merchant s website is a secured one then without leaving the site, the billing information of the customer is passed on to the payment gateway, which is further transmitted to the processor. The processor passes the billing information received from online payment gateway onto the credit card issuer bank. The issuer bank verifies the validity of the card and whether the amount requested on card is available or not. Once the requested amount by the customer is available, the bank set aside that amount for the merchant and sends back an approval number; otherwise a decline message is sent by the issuer bank to the processor which in turn passes back to merchant s site.
If the merchant is not having a secure site, the gateway may pass the approval information to the customer directly. Final payment is deposited in the internet merchant s account. This normally takes two business days.
Few important points to remember before setting your online credit card processing for your business. Even though online merchant accounts needs few days to set up but it is always better to start the procedure of its setting few weeks in advance to the actual time you start using it, since there may be many other important items to be worked on in the last few days before you open your new business.
There are many companies or banks offering online credit card processing but always opt for the one who are experts in this field so that you get the best deal in terms of advice, software and costs, therefore always prefer Power Pay Services. The companies or banks not specialize in online credit card processing can never be update with the latest trends and features available in market, thereby making your account lacking in many latest developments. The online credit card processing fees is different from retail credit card processing. All the processing fees to be levied should be properly stated and if you have any doubt better clear it before it s too late.
Let your online credit card processing have an established gateway company. Even though newer gateway companies may have excellent products but a high degree of reliability can be expected from established older companies like Power Pay Services. Always it is better to opt for company with proven records.
